Camping Alone | Overcoming The Fear

A bit of advice and a few tips for camping alone. whether you are a seasoned camper or just starting out. Going wild camping solo can be a daunting prospect. Here I give my thoughts on how to keep yourself safe while wild camping and how to overcome the fear of camping alone. These are just my own thoughts on the subject and other people may have different opinions. I welcome other opinions in the comments as together as an outdoor community we can help those that are wanting to make there first steps into wild camping solo. Please note, I live in the UK and have based this on wild camping or woodland camping in the UK. other locations may have predators that need to be accounted for. Having prior knowledge of such things would be advisable.

Building a Saxon House with Hand Tools: Timber Frame | Bushcraft Project (PART 3)

We continue building a bushcraft saxon house in the forest with hand tools only. This time we work on building a timber frame using woodworking techniques and joinery such as mortise and tenon. We use saw, hammer, knife and axe to craft wooden pegs to secure all of the joints in place. Firstly, we had to de-bark the logs using a drawknife. We then burned the ends of the logs to preserve them for longer and help prevent rot. This is an ancient wood preserving technique called Shou Sugi Ban. Using a shovel we dug holes to put the jowl posts in place. We cut tenon joints on the top of the jowl posts and then using a hammer and chisel we cut mortises into the wall plate or horizontal support beams. We also secured the ridgepole of the house with the same technique. With the foundations and timber frame now complete, the saxon house is ready for the roof rafters. In Part 4 we will be securing the mortise and tenon joints together with wooded pegs. We will also be using the bark peeling station to create rafters for the roof.
